How to use the pace calculator.

Pick a distance, or type your own in kilometres, then enter a time. You get the pace per kilometre and per mile, the speed in km/h and mph for the treadmill, and a split for every kilometre or mile at even pace.

Use it both ways. Enter a goal time to see the pace you need to hold. Enter a past race to see the pace you actually ran.

Why even splits

Even pacing is the most efficient way to race from 5K to the marathon. Starting too fast costs more at the end than it gains at the start, because the extra effort pushes you above threshold early. The splits table shows where you should be at every marker if you run the goal pace from start to finish.

Pace is not the whole story

Race pace only matters on race day and in a few sessions. Most of your running should be slower, at easy effort, controlled by heart rate. Find those numbers with the zone calculator, and your training paces with the training pace calculator.

Questions

How do I calculate my running pace?

Divide your time by the distance. A 10K in 55:00 is 55 minutes divided by 10 km, which is 5:30 per kilometre. The calculator does it for any distance and converts to per mile and speed.

What pace do I need for a sub 2 hour half marathon?

5:41 per kilometre, or 9:09 per mile, held for the full 21.1 km.

What pace is a 4 hour marathon?

5:41 per kilometre, or 9:09 per mile. Run the first half no faster than that, the second half is where the marathon is decided.

How do I convert pace to treadmill speed?

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per kilometre. 5:00 per km is 12.0 km/h. The calculator shows km/h and mph for any time and distance.

Should I run even or negative splits?

Even or slightly negative. Most personal bests come from holding a steady pace and finishing slightly faster, not from banking time early.
