What cadence actually is
Cadence is how many steps you take per minute, counting both feet. Some watches report strides per minute instead, which counts only one foot and reads as roughly half the number. Check which one your device shows before comparing yourself to anything you read online.
There is no universal correct cadence. Most recreational runners land somewhere between 155 and 185 steps per minute depending on height, pace, and natural mechanics. Elite marathoners often run 180 to 200 at race pace, but that number describes race effort at the front of the field, not an easy Tuesday run for everyone else.
Cadence is steps per minute. There is no single ideal number like exactly 180. A useful target is 3 to 8 percent higher than your own current cadence, not a fixed figure borrowed from an elite race field. What matters more than the number is fixing overstriding, landing with your foot too far in front of your hips.
Why cadence matters
Cadence itself is not the mechanism, stride length is. At a given pace, a lower cadence means a longer stride, which usually means your foot lands further out in front of your center of mass. That is overstriding, and it is the part that actually causes problems: a longer braking phase on landing and a higher impact loading rate through the shin and knee.
Raise cadence a little at the same pace and stride length shortens automatically. Your foot lands closer under your hips, ground contact time drops, and the braking force on landing goes down. This is why a small cadence increase is one of the few running-form changes with real evidence behind it for reducing impact-related injuries, without touching your training load at all.
